European Command
Release Date: 6/24/2004
Garmisch, Germany - The George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies begins its Program on Terrorism and Security Studies June 25 with participants from Europe, Eurasia and Central Asia and for the first time ever, expanding participation to include such nations as Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel.
This new program will help integrate the counter-terrorism community and enable individual nations to successfully cooperate in the on-going global war on terrorism. The course will identify and instruct current and future national security officials working in counter-terrorist programs and help them appreciate both the nature and magnitude of today's threat. It will also improve their ability to counter terrorism's regional implications by providing common grounds of knowledge, understanding and contacts. It will provide an "intellectual interoperability," that will transcend national borders and enable national security officials to cooperate at an international level to contain this threat.
Throughout the five-week course, a number of experts from security agencies such as the FBI, CIA and INTERPOL will address the participants on a range of topics including use of force, financing terrorism, the European Union response to terrorism and intelligence sharing.
The Marshall Center is a renowned U.S. Defense Department and German Ministry of Defense educational institution. More than 3,250 military and civilian officials from 51 nations have graduated from resident courses and approximately 11,000 have attended over 190 conferences discussing European and Central Asian security issues since the center was dedicated in 1993.
