Pratt & Whitney Completes Final Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology Demonstrator

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., June 22, 2004 - Pratt & Whitney (P&W) completed the final large military demonstrator engine for the Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology (IHPTET) program in a "last bolt" ceremony held recently at the company's Middletown, Conn., engine center.

The experimental test engine (XTE67/1) was developed to demonstrate improved thrust and weight performance and reduced production and maintenance costs. These new technologies can then be incorporated into existing and developing product lines, providing reliable advanced technology insertion with demonstrated benefits to the customer. P&W will begin testing on engine XTE67/1 at its West Palm Beach, Fla., facility next month.

The IHPTET program, which began in 1987, is a joint government/industry effort with support from the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Army, NASA and DARPA.

"IHPTET has been extremely successful at developing and transitioning advanced technology to our world class product lines including the F100 powering the F-15 and F-16, the F119 engine for the F/A-22 Raptor, and the F135 that will power the Joint Strike Fighter’s first flights," said Simeon Austin, Director of Advanced Engine Programs, P&W. "The judicious application of these technologies keeps our engines at the forefront of performance, reliability and affordability. Today we recognize the team that designed and manufactured this one of a kind demonstrator, and thank our customers who have worked so closely with us to make this happen."

As IHPTET comes to a close, a new joint government/industry effort called the Versatile Affordable Advanced Turbine Engines (VAATE) program has launched to investigate next generation propulsion technology. P&W is currently working a number of technology initiatives under VAATE.

Pratt & Whitney military engine models include the F119 powering the F/A-22 Raptor; the F135 for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter; the F117 for the C-17 Globemaster III; the F100 for F-15 and F-16 fighters; the J52 for the EA-6B Prowler; the TF33 powering AWACS, Joint STARS, B-52, C-141 and KC-135 aircraft; the PT6 for T-6A, C-12, T-34C and UH-1N aircraft; and the JT15 for the T-1A, UC-35A, and the Pegasus UCAV.

Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) company, is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.
