Recently, the 820th RED HORSE Squadron began participating in New Horizons 2004 Guyana -- a joint overseas training exercise co-sponsored by the United States Southern Command and the Guyana Defense Force (GDF).

The four-month exercise, which is being held at the invitation of the Government of Guyana, will include up to three construction projects, and two Medical Readiness Training exercises.

The 820th RHS is working alongside the GDF, making preparations for the arrival of the United States military personnel and equipment. The combined team of GDF, United States Air Force, Army and Navy engineers and medics, will engage in construction projects and medical training activities from June until September.

"While working in this austere environment, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen participating in New Horizons Guyana 2004 have an unparalleled opportunity to receive superb training, which will improve their vertical construction engineering skills and medical skills," said Maj. David Tavassoli, action officer United States Southern Command, Exercise and Joint Training.

With $450,000 earmarked toward humanitarian and civic assistance and exercise related construction projects scheduled to begin later this month.

"The local community will receive a school, a clinic, a community center and medical care," said Tavassoli.

Approximately 200 U.S. military personnel will participate in the exercise on a rotation basis including two medical teams conducting clinics at sites around the country.

"This opportunity for the United States Southern Command and the Guyana Defense Force to enhance military and political relations is a win-win situation," said Tavassoli.
