Thales wins contract for the future Command and liaison vehicle programme
17 June 2004
The Thales Driver's Vision Enhancer (DVE) has been selected by Alvis Vickers Limited to meet the driver sight requirement for the British Army's Future Command & Liaison Vehicle (FCLV) programme. This contract to manufacture and support more than 400 DVE systems marks the first volume introduction of uncooled thermal imaging driver sights into the UK vehicle fleet. Building upon the extensive experience of supplying over 14,000 first generation Image Intensification sights, the development of this next generation sighting system reinforces Thales' position at the forefront of the UK Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) market and strengthens the DVE's export appeal.
The compact and lightweight night driving aid will be fitted in the Alvis Vickers Multi-role Lightweight Vehicle, the first of which is due to enter service in 2007. Providing a significant enhancement in situational awareness as well as greater safety, its introduction into the driver's compartment is an important step in the overall plan to improve the effectiveness of the UK LAV fleet.
Commenting on the award of the DVE contract, Chris Gane, Managing Director of Thales Defence Optronics activities said: "The DVE offers high performance at an affordable price; it provides a 24-hour driving capability with significantly improved situational awareness, which is essential for today's battlefield. Selection of the DVE system for the FCLV programme is an important milestone towards winning further orders both in the UK and export markets. The teams in the UK and Canada, who contributed to the DVE development programme, are delighted that the system has been selected for this important programme."
