Thales launches three new night vision devices
15 June 2004
Thales is expanding its line of Sophie thermal imagers with the creation of three new products. The Sophie multi-application portable night vision device is now available in three new versions. The first offers an extended range; the second is a multi-function device offering complete target acquisition, location and designation functions; and the third offers very high-resolution imaging in addition to the above features.
With more than 6,000 units sold in 45 countries, the Sophie thermal camera is now widely used for surveillance, combat and peacekeeping missions. Non-detectable due to its infrared operation, it can be used to observe even camouflaged targets, both day and night, under all weather conditions. Its lightweight design (2.4 kg) makes it ideal for use by infantry soldiers. It can recognise a tank at a range of more than 3 km. Operating in the 8-12 µm spectral band, Sophie is impervious to obscurants such as fog, smoke, fire and solar dazzle, making it suitable for all battlefield environments and law enforcement missions.
The expanded Sophie product line meets the full spectrum of observation, surveillance, detection, location, target designation and fire control requirements of all types of users (troopers, platoon leaders, scouts, police, security forces, border patrols, etc.).
The three new versions, designed with numerous common subassemblies, are as follows:
1. The "Sophie LR" (Long Range): Range expanded 25% through reduced FOV and built-in image stabilisation.
2. The "Sophie MF" (Multi-Function): In addition to the features of the "Sophie LR", this version includes an eye-safe laser rangefinder, a GPS, a direction finder and a laser pointing system. These features transform the basic device into a complete acquisition, location and designation system that weighs less than 3 kg. The "Sophie MF" is also available with a built-in colour camera.
3. The "Sophie XR" (eXtended Range): In addition to all the features of Sophie MF, this version includes the new SOFRADIR high-resolution "Scorpio" detector, extending Sophie's range capabilities to 5-10 km.
All of these devices are commercially available with a full range of shared accessories. The high level of commonality across the Sophie product family optimises user training and equipment maintenance requirements.
