Boeing Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System Wins $86 Million Contract

ST. LOUIS, June 11, 2004 -- hinnkThe U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Boeing [NYSE: BA] an $86 million contract for the first full-rate production lot of Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing Systems (JHMCS).

Under this contract, Boeing will produce the JHMCS for U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard F-15 Eagles, USAF F-16 Fighting Falcons, U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, and four international customers. The program anticipates the U.S. military and international customers will order a total of more than 2,000 JHMCS, with initial delivery of the 250+ systems on this contract scheduled for March 2005.

"Providing our nation's warfighters with a revolutionary system that improves their situational awareness, lethality, and survivability is a privilege and we're thrilled to receive this contract," said Mike Rietz, Boeing Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System program manager.

First used in Operation Iraqi Freedom, JHMCS gives pilots the ability to rapidly acquire and designate a target simply by looking at it. By putting an aiming cross, which is projected on the helmet visor, over the desired target and pressing a button, the pilot can quickly and easily aim the weapons and sensors to designate and attack airborne or ground targets. This not only makes the pilot and aircraft more lethal, but it also makes them more survivable because it reduces the time the pilot and aircraft are exposed to potential enemy fire. JHMCS also displays aircraft altitude, airspeed, g's and angle of attack on the visor, as well as tactical information, to increase the pilot's awareness of the state of his aircraft and the combat situation.

Boeing is the prime contractor and integrator for JHMCS and Vision System International, based in San Jose, Calif., is the major subcontractor.
