LEADERS FROM V CORPS' 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION MEET WITH IRAQI ADVISORY COUNCIL

1st Infantry Division release

Release Date: 6/4/2004

TIKRIT, Iraq - The Iraqi Advisory Council, comprised of influential Iraqis from the country's north-central region, met with leadership from V Corps' 1st Infantry Division for the first time June 3. The leaders discussed problems and recommend solutions to them in an effort to improve cohesion throughout the region. Facilitated by Col. Gene Kamena, the division's chief of staff, the group divided into four subcommittees to address specific issues within their area of focus.

The Economic Subcommittee discussed ways to improve the overall economy of the region by increasing employment opportunities. The Cultural Subcommittee deliberated over Iraqis' expectations following the June 30 transfer of sovereignty. The political subcommittee addressed concerns about the January 2005 elections, and the Committee for Security looked at ways to decrease violence and the rehiring of former Iraqi military members.

After a briefing on the committee's conclusions, the conference wrapped up with a tour of the new North Central Region Iraqi Civil Defense Corps Training Facility.
