U.S. Troops Kill 13 Iraqi Militiamen In Fighting

11 May 2004 -- A senior U.S. military official says U.S. troops killed 13 members of radical Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's militia in fighting overnight.

The official today said 14 others were wounded in the battles near the city of Al-Kufah. Yesterday, the U.S. military said U.S. soldiers killed some 35 insurgents during fighting with al-Sadr supporters since 9 May in Baghdad.

In the northern city of Kirkuk, Iraqi police say a bomb exploded in a crowded market in a Kurdish neighborhood today. Police say at least three people were killed and 23 were injured.

There also reports that a civilian convoy was attacked on its way from Jordan to Baghdad today. Several vehicles among the 21-vehicle convoy were reportedly destroyed in the attack near the Iraqi town of Rutba.

Russian news agencies are reporting one Russian worker was killed and two taken hostage in Baghdad yesterday. No group has claimed responsibility or made any ransom demands.
