Lockheed Martin's HIMARS Successfully Fires Guided MLRS Rockets in Recent Testing

Dallas, TX, May 11th, 2004 -- Lockheed Martin's [NYSE: LMT] High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) successfully fired nine Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets during two days of testing in late April.

The first four GMLRS rockets were fired on Tuesday, April 27, from a HIMARS launcher at White Sands Missile Range, NM. The rockets were conditioned cold before testing. Five additional GMLRS rockets, conditioned hot, were successfully fired from the HIMARS launcher on April 30. Test objectives for both tests included verifying GMLRS interoperability with the HIMARS launcher; assessing rocket performance; verifying GMLRS models and simulations; and demonstrating a new version of software. All test objectives were achieved.

"HIMARS provides the joint expeditionary force a lethal C-130-deployable capability that provides critical long-range fires immediately upon arrival. This is Future Combat System capability today," said LTC Darryl Colvin, U.S. Army product manager - Field Artillery Launchers.

"HIMARS and Guided MLRS are the cornerstones of our future fighting force," said COL James Heverin, TRADOC system manager for Rocket and Missile Systems at Fort Sill, OK. "With these two systems, our commanders and ground forces will get the exact combat effect on the battlefield they desire."

The first production HIMARS launcher and the first GLMRS rockets were presented to the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps in a rollout ceremony held on April 15 at the Lockheed Martin manufacturing facility in Camden, AR. The U.S. Army is planning to produce more than 100,000 GMLRS rockets. Current joint service acquisition plans call for procurement of more than 900 HIMARS launchers. The HIMARS First Unit Equipped (FUE) is on schedule for early 2005.

HIMARS can be deployed into areas previously inaccessible to heavier launchers. It also includes the self-loading, autonomous features that have made MLRS the premier rocket artillery system in the world. HIMARS carries a single six-pack of MLRS rockets, or one Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile, on the FMTV five-ton truck. Its fire control system, electronics and communications units are interchangeable with the MLRS M270A1 launcher, and the crew and training are the same.

The GMLRS rocket is the latest addition to the MLRS family of munitions. GMLRS is an all-weather, precision-guided rocket that provides increased accuracy thus reducing the number of rockets necessary to defeat current targets by 80 percent. The GMLRS rocket provides increased precision and maneuverability, and can be fired from the MLRS M270 and M270A1 launchers and the HIMARS launcher.
