Non-Skid Technology ensures Fleet Readiness

WASHINGTON -- USS John F Kennedy (CV 67) is currently testing a newly developed rapid cure repair system kit for non-skid surfaces. The Fleet saves time and money with this repair kit and such a product serves as another enabler to the success of the Fleet Response Plan (FRP). Current materials take up to seven full days to cure and aren't tolerant of operational conditions. Until recently, the Fleet had no rapid cure non-skid system for installation by the ship's force. The past method was time-consuming and interfered with flight operations and readiness.
Michael Evans, Naval Sea Systems Command's Material Engineering Division (NAVSEA 05M1) program manager says the new non-skid product is a 30-day, 1600 landing non-skid material that is primer-less, single coat, user-friendly and cures for landing in 24 hours. "The technology means less time required for completing operational non-skid repairs," said Evans. "Since it cures and is ready for service in a much shorter timeframe than traditional materials, there is a smaller impact on Fleet operations."
The increased tempo of Fleet operations has demonstrated the need for at-sea rapid repair of non-skid surfaces. Ships won't have to return to port for coating repair since the ship's crew can apply it, thus reducing failure concerns.
Contractors applied three manufacturers' fast-cure non-skid systems on the Kennedy in mid-February. Normally, inclement weather would be a concern, but the bad weather proved to make for a more accurate test. The products were applied over a water-jetted deck and, despite a light rain, Naval Air Force Atlantic (AIRLANT) and Naval Air Force Pacific (AIRPAC) got exactly what they wanted. The non-skid material has performed well, proving that less than desirable environmental conditions will not undermine the value of these systems. No primer was used in these applications.
The products endured 2,706 landings, spanning 75 days aboard Kennedy, far surpassing original performance requirements. Anticipated time for Fleet-wide introduction is early FY 05.
Safety and performance aren't the only return on investment. NAVSEA is keeping an eye on the bottom line. As demonstrated during recent military operations, approximately eight carriers can be surged for action during a year.
Having a product that is Sailor friendly and eliminating the need to take the ship offline for emergent repair, results in significant cost savings and improves operational availability and capability. The fast-cure non-skid system brings economic savings and increased Fleet readiness, helping to meet the goals of the Fleet Response Plan (FRP).
