BAE SYSTEMS receives U.S. army contract for Black Hawk helicopter fuel systems
05 May 2004
BAE Systems has received a contract from the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command for delivery of 160 Auxiliary Fuel Management Systems (AFMS) to be installed on UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, including those used in Iraq and Afghanistan. The $3.7 million contract also calls for the delivery of 60 auxiliary fuel management panels that also will be installed on Black Hawk helicopters.
The BAE Systems AFMS computes continuous fuel quantity data for individual tanks and total fuel quantity. The system also computes aircraft center of gravity, fuel transfer quantities, transfer rate, and fuel system warning conditions. The program will be managed from the companys Platform Solutions facility in Los Angeles.
These fuel systems will give Black Hawk helicopter pilots improved situational awareness of fuel quantity and flow in order to improve the operational effectiveness of the aircraft, said Andre Doumitt, business development manager at BAE Systems.
Mike Boyajian of the Army Black Hawk AFMS program office said the fuel system kits will be installed on Black Hawk aircraft in the post-production phase.
The post-production kit installation program increases the quality of the aircraft delivered to the field units, since the soldier receives an aircraft that's fully mission-capable and can be immediately deployed overseas, Boyajian said. The addition of the AFMS kits to the post-production installation program is a great benefit, since it will provide the commanders in the field with the fuel capacity and flexibility they require to accomplish their missions.
