His comments were echoed by Jordan's King Abdullah, who also stressed that resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a fundamental issue for many Arabs.
- Indonesia's Aceh Rebels Free 26 Hostages VOA News 16 May 2004 -- Indonesia says separatist rebels in Aceh province have released 26 hostages, a few days after the government announced plans to end military rule in the troubled region.
- ISRAEL/SHARON VOA 16 May 2004 -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is developing a new plan to withdraw from Gaza, after his Likud Party rejected his original plan in a referendum. The news comes the day after more than 100-thousand Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv in favor of a Gaza withdrawal, amid renewed international efforts to get the peace process going again.
- ISRAEL/GAZA VOA 16 May 2004 -- Israeli officials say they plan to increase military operations in the Gaza Strip, including renewed house demolitions and intensive air strikes. The cabinet decision was made after Israel's Supreme Court gave the army permission to resume demolishing homes in order to broaden an Israeli security zone along the Gaza-Egypt border.
