FORT BRAGG, N.C. (Army News Service, April 28, 2004) - A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter assigned to 1st Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, at Fort Bragg, was found at approximately 7:55 p.m. April 27, crashed in water near the Great Pee Dee River Bridge off of Interstate 95 near Dillon, S.C.
There are no visible signs of survivors reported at the scene, Fort Bragg officials said. "We are continuing to conduct a thorough search of the area," an official said.
South Carolina Highway Patrol closed one northbound lane on I-95 to assist in recovery operations. The Florence Fire Department provided a dive recovery team to assist in recovery operations since the aircraft was located in the water.
This joint operation between the Florence County Emergency Services and Fort Bragg has changed from search and rescue to search and recovery operation.
"Our primary effort now is securing the crash site and recovery of the Soldiers," officials said.
The helicopter had three crewmembers on board, the names of the flight crew are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. The unit is working closely with the family members to ensure they have the most updated information and providing assistance as needed.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, officials added.
