COMBINED FORCES COMMAND AFGHANISTAN RELEASE

KABUL, Afghanistan, April 28, 2004 -- In coordination with the Islamic Transitional Government of Afghanistan, Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan continues to train the Afghan National Army, provide civil affairs support, and disrupt, deny, and destroy terrorist and anti-ITGA forces in order to establish a stable and secure Afghanistan.

Over the last several days, Coalition forces constructed a C-130 capable airstrip in Paktika Province. This airstrip allows the tactical commander additional flexibility to reposition forces quickly throughout the region and extends our tactical reach which will increase both security and stability in the region. The airstrip also increases the sustainability of coalition forces conducting border interdiction and security operations. This construction effort demonstrates our long term commitment to stabilizing the region and combating transnational terrorists and those who would give them sanctuary.

Monday, weapons caches were found near Khowst, Ghecko, and Deh Rawod by coalition forces while on patrol. Khowst found 2 82mm mortar rounds, 2 unidentified AT mines and 7 unidentified fuses. Ghecko's cache consisted of 35 RPG rounds, 4 launchers, a 0.50 caliber with 300 rounds, multiple assault rifles and a 60mm mortar. Deh Rawod had 8 RPG rounds, heavy machine guns, 250 0.50 caliber rounds and 10 RPGs with launchers. Also in Deh Rawod, 3 61mm mortar rounds and a 107mm rocket was found yesterday.

Here in Kabul and throughout Afghanistan yesterday, the citizens of Afghanistan celebrated their Independence Day from the Communist Regime of Mohammed Najibullah. Parades were part of the celebration. Although security was high, there have been no attacks during the Independence Day celebrations in the past three years.

Today, the Civil Affairs team from Parwan delivers humanitarian aid to Cao Orphanage in Kabul.
