Greater protection for our troops on the ground

German Army Medical Corps gets Duro 3

04/22/2004

From Kassel straight to the Hindu Kush: forming part of Germany's contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, the first of a total of twelve Duro 3 mobile medical team vehicles were transferred to the Bundeswehr. Lieutenant General Hans-Heinrich Dieter, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Bundeswehr, took formal delivery of the Rheinmetall Landsysteme-made vehicle at a ceremony at the company's Kassel plant.

For the troops on the ground, the fielding of the Duro 3 as a replacement for the soft-skinned vehicles currently in service will mean a marked improvement in physical safety.

Apart from the twelve vehicles earmarked for the Medical Corps, by the end of 2004 the Bundeswehr will be receiving four military police versions of the vehicle as well as ten transporters for bomb disposal operations, all procured under an 'immediate operational requirement' contract.

The Bundeswehr's total requirement for armoured transport vehicles for its medical, military police, reconnaissance, command & control, bomb disposal and communications elements is estimated to run to over 900 vehicles in the medium term.

Thanks to the Duro 3 contract, Rheinmetall Landsysteme is able to build on its global reputation for excellence as a developer and manufacturer of high-quality, custom-designed wheeled armoured vehicles. Apart from a high level of crew protection, the vehicle features the utmost in modularity, mobility and flexibility. Thanks to its modular design, this state-of-the-art multipurpose vehicle can be quickly configured to perform a wide variety of different missions. Weighing just 12 tons, moreover, it can be airlifted in transport aircraft like the C-130 Hercules, C-160 Transall or A 400M.

Manufactured in exclusive cooperation with the Swiss company MOWAG, the Duro 3 is an ultramodern, multipurpose 6x6 wheeled armoured vehicle. It is an armoured version of the Duro family of non-armoured vehicles, more than 3,500 of which have already been successfully fielded, primarily in the Swiss Army.
