NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709) returned to Norfolk Naval Station April 10 after a six-month deployment.

Rickover, assigned to Commander, Task Force 69, U.S. 6th Fleet, deployed Oct. 10 to conduct joint operations in the Northern Atlantic in support of the global war on terrorism.

With sealth, endurance and agility, fast-attack submarines like Rickover are multi-mission capable, able to deploy and support special forces operations, disrupt and destory and adversary's military and economic operations at sea, provide early strike from close proximity, and ensure undersea superiority.

Commanded by Cmdr. Kenneth L. Gray, Rickover is the first U.S. warship to be named in honor of Adm. Hyman G. Rickover, the father of the nuclear Navy. The submarine is 360 feet long, displaces 6,900 tons of water and can travel in excess of 25 knots. Rickover's armaments include Tomahawk cruise missiles and MK-48 advanced capability torpedoes.
