USS GEORGE WASHINGTON, At Sea (NNS) -- USS George Washington (CVN 73) Sailors celebrated Easter with a colorful holiday of fellowship and gratefulness April 11.
The day started bright and early, with 225 George Washington (GW) Sailors of different faiths coming together on the flight deck to worship.
"It is a special occasion when Sailors of different religions come together to celebrate," said Chaplain (Cmdr.) Bob Williams, GW's command chaplain. "For many Sailors, practicing their faith gives them the courage and strength to be away from their families, especially on holidays, such as today."
Even though GW Sailors are far from home, they still had plenty of close friends to celebrate the special day with.
"This holiday was one that I will always cherish," said Yeoman 3rd Class (AW) Tunisha Mitchell of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 136. I was very thankful that even though I was not at home, I was able to spend this special holiday with my shipmates who I consider a second family."
With Sailors enjoying their holiday with prayer and each other's company, there was yet another part of their day to anticipate: their holiday dinner. According to Culinary Specialist 1st Class (AW) Lidia Caton from Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron (HS) 5, S-2 division went the extra mile to ensure the crew had a special meal, starting with transforming the galley into a banquet hall scene, including tablecloths, candlelight and soft music.
The holiday menu included prime rib, steamed shrimp, and was highlighted by a roasted pig. The meal was served to the crew by the ship's officers, who showed once again that holidays aboard the "Spirit of Freedom" transcend the ranks. To top it off, at the end of their meal, the crew gathered for a special ice cream social, including chiefs and officers.
"Out to sea we are a family, and our responsibility as culinary specialists is to take care of the crew by making their holidays on the GW feel as close to home as possible," Caton said.
At the end of the day, Sailors were able to reflect on the Easter holiday they spent aboard GW with their fellow shipmates, while at the same time remembering their mission to serve their country.
