MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- Lt. Cmdr. Michael T. Sullivan, commanding officer for the forward-deployed patrol coastal ship (PC) USS Firebolt (PC 10), was relieved of command April 1 by Capt. Kurt W. Tidd, commander, Destroyer Squadron 50/commander, Task Force 55.
The decision to relieve Sullivan was made following a Judge Advocate General's investigation into an incident on Feb. 16, when Firebolt sustained damage from colliding with a navigational aid off the coast of Iraq. Tidd cited a loss of confidence in Sullivan's ability to command based on information garnered from the JAGMAN investigation.
Cmdr. Shan Byrne, the chief staff officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron 50/Commander, Task Force 55, assumed command of Firebolt. Sullivan will be temporarily assigned to the staff of Commander Amphibious Group 2 at Naval Amphibious Base, Norfolk, Va.
Firebolt, a 174-foot Cyclone-class patrol coastal normally homeported at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Norfolk, Va., has been deployed to Bahrain in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since the ship arrived here in February 2003, it has completed three crew swaps with other Norfolk-based PCs.
