Operation to wipe out armed gang underway in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, March 30, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- The operation to wipe out an armed gang is well underway in the Kibrai district, Tashkent Region, Tass reports from the place of the incident. Law enforcement officers fenced off the gang at a dwelling house. One of the commandos told Tass that there are casualties on both sides in the clash. According to information from the republican Interior Ministry, terrorists who attacked a motor traffic police post, situated 15 kilometers from Tashkent, were fenced off by policemen in a nearby house. All approaches to the house are cordoned by police. This morning, bandits activated an explosive device near the motor traffic police post in the Kibrai district, Tashkent Region. The terrorists opened fire on policemen right after the blast. Then, police officers fenced off the bandits at a nearby house. The Central Asian information center reported that terrorists blasted, simultaneously with the clash at the motor traffic post in the Kibrai district, a minibus in the Bostanlyk district, Tashkent Region, near the dam of the Charvaksky water reservoir. It is a strategic project. If the dam is exploded, the so-called Charvaksky Sea can fully inundate the Uzbek capital. Official sources have not confirmed this incident so far. All entries to and exits from Tashkent are blocked now. All markets closed, and police thoroughly inspect suspicious cars and pedestrians. People are not panicky, but usually crowded streets look noticeably deserted. People to not go to streets without special need. Traffic by buses and commuter trains stopped between cities of the Tashkent Region. The Tuesday events confirmed a statement by President Islam Karimov who stated on Monday live in a televised address that the terrorist acts in Uzbekistan had been thoroughly engineered as large-scale and well-organized events. Karimov noted: "Facts show above all that preparation for a series of terror acts in Tashkent and its suburbia had been conducted thoroughly for a long time. We witness here experience of gunmen, acting to spread fear and panic among population and to take lives of innocent civilians." /AH/210 End
