White House Report March 29: Afghanistan
U.S. Supports postponement of elections in Afghanistan,
White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters March 29 that the United States supports Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai's decision to postpone elections in that country until September.
"That was a decision that they made based on the fact that they felt they should hold both [presidential and parliamentary] elections at the same time. We are there to support them in their efforts as they move forward on those elections. We'll continue working with leaders in Afghanistan to help them move forward on those elections," McClellan said.
According to news reports, Karzai's announcement March 28 that elections in Afghanistan would not be held until September was due to security and logistical concerns.
In a recent report, the United Nations recommended to Afghanistan's interim government that logistical and security concerns needed to be improved before presidential and parliamentary elections are held.
