EADS Systems House is called for C3I System for the French Army

Paris, 23 March 2004

EADS Defence and Communications Systems has signed a contract with the French armaments procurement agency (DGA) to supply additional SIR (regimental information system) command and communication system order worth € 200 million.

The order mainly involves the production of an additional 131 command post vehicles, 230 light SIR kits used by army captains, and 35 mobile kits designed to be used in a vehicle or under a field shelter. In addition to the 441 vehicles already ordered, EADS DCS is also being called upon to upgrade 78 light and heavy command post vehicles, as well as to develop a new tactical communications system which is to be integrated into the SIR vehicles. Work on the integration of SIR into frontline armoured vehicles and AT-10 or AT-15 shelters are being carried out at the EADS site in Val de Reuil.

SIR is already the French Army’s main tactical level information system and it will ultimately be installed in over 900 vehicles. The French Army presently operates SIR in its training schools and in two of its brigades.

EADS DCS supplied recently the 100th SIR unit to the French army. The company also ensures the management of all the aspects of this program including the hardware and software.

“This large order from the DGA confirms the confidence that the French authorities place in the technological expertise of EADS DCS, which is the ‘Systems House’ within EADS,” declared Antoine Coursimault, who heads the C3I programs for EADS DCS.

SIR is a key asset in the digitization of the battlefield and has already asserted its place as the central system of the French GTIA (Groupement Tactique Inter Armes). As a near-real-time system, SIR allows users to plan and direct the activities of all combat units in the theatre of operations by transmitting and representing all data required to take decisions. It helps to accelerate the speed of the operations and represents the first implementation of the concept of Network-Centric operations in France. Its ability to network ground troops, armoured vehicles, mission and combat helicopters, represents a precursory step towards the French defence concept BOA (Bulle Opérationnelle Aéroterrestre).
