BAE SYSTEMS Receives $13 Million Army Order For Helicopter Portable Combat Refuelling System
22 Mar 2004
BAE Systems has received a $13 million contract from the U.S. Armys Tank Automotive and Armament Command (TACOM) to deliver 54 additional units of its second-generation Advanced Aviation Forward Area Refuelling System (AAFARS).
This fifth production order is part of an eight-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract. One hundred seven systems currently are on contract, and final contract value is expected to exceed $100 million for a total quantity of 372 systems.
AAFARS is a modular, lightweight, portable combat refuelling system designed for rapid refuelling of forward-area military helicopters in support of deep strikes. The system has a 240 gallon-per-minute pump that can fuel four helicopters simultaneously at a rate of 55 gallons per minute each.
We are pleased to partner with BAE Systems to ensure that our helicopter fleet is equipped with the latest and most modern refuelling capability available in the market, said Col. Genaro Dellarocco of the Armys Program Executive Office for Combat Support & Combat Services Support. Were looking forward to begin fielding the new system in May 2004.
AAFARS offers a significant tactical advantage with its small size, lightweight, high reliability, low noise, and ease of use. Key features include multiple fuel capability that allows the system to run on the same fuel as is being delivered to the aircraft.
This rugged system is helicopter-transportable and soldier-portable. Assembly has been field-proven in 20 minutes, and tear down in 25 minutes, said Tom Herring, vice president of BAE Systems Integrated Solutions. The system also is designated as a critical component of the Armys modernisation plan.
BAE Systems, under a previous contract with TACOM, delivered 48 first-generation AAFARS units. BAE Systems and TACOM are in discussions to upgrade the existing 48 systems to the second-generation configuration.
