General Dynamics Selected by M/A-COM to Deploy Land Mobile Radio System for the National Capital Region

NEEDHAM, Mass. – General Dynamics Network Systems’ Wireless Services unit has been selected by M/A-COM, Inc., to deploy a turnkey, completely integrated, land mobile radio system that will link 10 U.S. Army installations in the National Capital Region (NCR). General Dynamics Network Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD). M/A-COM, Inc., is a business unit of Tyco Electronics.

The NCR will be the home of the first Department of Defense Project 25 Trunked IP Communication System, providing secure base communications and interoperability with First Responders.

As a subcontractor to M/A-COM, General Dynamics will provide site preparation work, site management, equipment installation, and lifecycle maintenance services. The subcontract is valued at more than $5 million.

The contract was awarded to M/A-COM by the U.S. Army's Project Manager, Defense Communications and Army Transmissions Systems; Assistant Project Manager, Base Radio Systems (APM BRS) to deploy and link critical communications to more than 5,000 Army base personnel in and around the NCR. The system also will include several sites in Maryland and Virginia.

Deployed by the Army's Director Of Information Management for DOD users, M/A-COM's communications system, in combination with its NetworkFirst Interoperability System, will be the first deployment of its kind in the nation's armed forces.

This IP-based network solution will facilitate interoperable communications, via its NetworkFirst system, with approximately 57 civilian public safety agencies located in the NCR and suburban Maryland and Virginia. These agencies are currently communicating on different frequencies and have disparate radio systems.

"M/A-COM's advanced system will provide critical interoperable communications for Army personnel based in the NCR and will leverage COTS [Commercial Off The Shelf] servers, routers and PCs to provide reduced total ownership cost," said Kevin Fleming, M/A-COM Director, Federal Sales.

"We are pleased that M/A-COM chose General Dynamics to deploy this secure and highly reliable advanced communications system," said Tom Kirchmaier, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics Wireless Services. "General Dynamics has a proud heritage in partnering with the U.S. Army on missions around the world. We now look forward to working with M/A-COM on a project critical to our Homeland Defense and extending our heritage to the security of this country.”

The Wireless Services division of General Dynamics Network Systems pioneered the rapid deployment of wireless communications networks, having deployed more than 10,000 wireless sites around the globe, and offers a fully integrated turnkey solution to both established carriers and broadband entrepreneurs.
