USAFE News

Release Date: 3/16/2004

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (USAFENS) - U.S. Air Forces in Europe will activate the 712th Air Base Group as U.S. host unit at Morón Air Base, Spain, March 22.

USAFE officials said this move will provide the level of experienced leadership, supervision and knowledge necessary to ensure Morón Air Base can safely and securely execute its dynamic mission. In addition, several USAFE geographically separated units throughout the command's area of responsibility will be aligned underneath the 712th ABG to pull these operations together into one team.

These units include USAFE air postal squadrons at Milano, Italy; Rhein-Main AB, Germany; Madrid, Spain; Royal Air Force Alconbury, United Kingdom; London, U.K.; RAF Menwith Hill, UK; Lisbon, Portugal; Athens, Greece; Istanbul, Turkey; Brussels, Belgium; and the Hague, Netherlands.

As a group, the 712th ABG will be better positioned and staffed to effectively advocate on behalf of these GSUs to get them the resources they need. Lastly, the additional senior leadership will allow the unit to enhance its expeditionary in-transit capabilities and effectively carry out Morón's role as a critical link in supporting the rotation of aerospace expeditionary forces through the USAFE AOR.
