WASHINGTON, March 14, 2004 -- Deadly roadside bomb attacks in Iraq this weekend left six U.S. soldiers dead, Combined Joint Task Force 7 officials said in a press release.

Three soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division were killed by an improvised explosive device attack on their convoy southeast of Baghdad March 13. A fourth soldier injured in that attack died of his wounds today at a combat hospital.

The 1st Infantry Division soldiers were conducting a patrol at about 10:45 p.m. when their vehicle was struck by an IED, the news release said.

Earlier March 13, the release stated, two U.S. soldiers from the same unit were killed and three were wounded in a similar attack in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.

During that attack, an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire attack killed the two soldiers and wounded three others when their patrol was attacked at about 4:55 a.m.

The soldiers were traveling in three humvees near Forward Operating Base Ironhorse in Tikrit when the attack occurred.

The wounded soldiers were taken by air to the 67th Combat Support Hospital at Forward Operating Base Speicher, and were reported to be in stable condition.

This weekend's casualties were the first suffered by the 1st Infantry Division since their arrival Baghdad. The unit is part of the military rotation replacing soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division in the region.

The names of soldiers killed are being withheld until their families are notified. >
