SEOUL, March 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Two South Korean air force fighter jets collided in mid-air off the west coast Thursday, Air Force officials said. The fate of the pilots were not known.
The F-5E jets from Suwon Air Base just south of Seoul crashed into the Yellow Sea after colliding at 2:47 p.m. (0527 GMT), Lt. Col.
Choi Seok-in, an Air Force spokesman, was quoted by South Korean Yonhap News Agency as saying.
The single-seat jets were practicing aerial maneuvering when they collided, he said.
"We don't know yet whether the pilots ejected to safety or were killed," he said, identifying them as a major and a captain.
The Air Force sent helicopters to conduct rescue operations and look into the cause of the accident, the spokesman said.
The crash site is believed to be 24 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Taean off South Korea's central west coast, he said.
