IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, March 1, IRNA - Pakistan`s law-enforcement agencies have arrested eight Al-Qaeda suspects in the last 48 hours in Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP). Daily Times reported in its Monday issue that six suspects, including three Algerian and three Afghan nationals were held from a refugee camp near Kohat district. Two others were also apprehended from the same district. These arrests were made during a search operation jointly by the police and the secret agencies. Meanwhile, the government has warned the locals of tribal belt, close to the Pak-Afghan border to surrender the terrorist elements, otherwise a fresh operation would be launched there. The political authorities in the area, controlled by the Federal Government, hurled this warning on Sunday till Monday, asking the tribesmen to purge their localities of suspects, The News daily said on Monday. In a related development, the newspaper added that the 300 elders of tribes demanded of the government to send the Afghan refugees back home. Reports in the world media and local newspaper have been indicating that remnants of Al-Qaeda and Taliban could still be hiding close to the rugged Pak-Afghan border. Both countries share over 2200-kilometer border. It is suspected after the fall of Taliban regime in 2002, scores of their supports and followers had moved into tribal areas to carry out their activities inside Pakistan and Afghanistan. There have been reports that in case, Pakistan failed to deliver, the United States forces could cross in to the area to crush the terrorists, local press said. MHA/TSH/216 End
