BAE SYSTEMS Identification Friend Or Foe (IFF) System Selected For E-2 Advanced Hawkeye Program

16 Feb 2004

BAE Systems has been awarded a $30.4 million contract to upgrade the Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system in the E-2 Advanced Hawkeye, currently in the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase. The effort, which includes new design efforts and upgrades to the E-2,s existing IFF system, will increase the U.S. Navy, s capability to network battlefield data and direct it in real time to decision makers.

The IFF system, in conjunction with an upgraded radar and antenna suite, forms the detection system for the E-2. The aircraft, which views the battlefield as a three-dimensional chessboard, detects hostile aircraft and missiles, shares data with surface ships, guides aircraft to their targets and knits the pictures of the hostilities into a coherent whole. BAE Systems Communication, Navigation, Identification and Reconnaissance (CNIR) will be a key member of the Detection Suite Integrated Product Team together with Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems & Sensors, Syracuse, N.Y., which provides the radar system, and L3 Communications Randtron, Menlo Park, California, which provides the antenna suite.

Under the four-year program, BAE Systems will deliver seven preproduction systems to E-2 Northrop Grumman following qualification testing. Two of the seven systems will be installed on new E-2 Advanced Hawkeyes for the Navy. These two aircraft are the first in a series of 75 planes planned for production.
