BUCHAREST, Feb. 9 (Xinhuanet)-- A team of high-ranking US officers arrived here Monday to have technical talks with Romania on the possibility of deploying American military bases on Romanian territory, a spokesman of the Romanian Defense Ministry said Monday.
The team will stay in Romania for two days and go to the Constanta area, in the southeast of Romania, where the experts will look at potential sites for new American facilities. They will draw up a report to help the US government establish a strategy for the deployment of the bases, spokesman Gelaledin Nezir said.
"The Romanian Defense Ministry is open to any requests, which will be answered by the political authorities," he said.
US Deputy Secretary of Defense Douglas Feith announced late in 2003 that technical negotiations on the deployment of US military bases in Romania would start in early February 2004.
