DR of Congo: UN mission helps restore calm to Bukavu

10 February 2004 The United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported today that tensions in the town of Bukavu have abated, but the situation is still being monitored.

Friction arose in recent days after the provincial Governor, former rebel leader Xavier Ciribanya, was suspended by the DRC's central transitional government after illegal arms caches were discovered in Bukavu.

In accord with agreements and decisions, his bodyguards have turned in military equipment to the UN Mission, which is known as MONUC.

The Mission is continuing to patrol Bukavu to help maintain calm.
