BELGRADE, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld paid a brief visit to Croatia on Sunday, hoping to strengthen military cooperation between the two sides.

During his talks with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, Rumsfeld said that Washington hopes Croatia should consider method and possibility of dispatch of its troops to Iraq, Croatia's Presidential Office said in a statement.

Mesic said that Croatia will consider sending troops to Iraq, adding that the troop should be under UN command.

In his three-hour visit, Rumsfeld also met with other Croatia's top officials. He thanked Croatia for supporting the US-led fight against terrorism, and reiterated US support for Croatia's efforts for NATO membership.

Rumsfeld is the first US cabinet official to visit Croatia since former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's tour of the country in 1999.
