Pakistan, Ukrain to enhance cooperation in trade, defence

Islamabad, Feb 8, IRNA -- Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri and his Ukrainian counterpart Kostyantyn Gryshchenko have emphasized the need to enhance cooperation in the fields of trade and defence, Radio Pakistan reported Sunday. Both the foreign ministers are in Munich, attending the Munich Conference on Security Policy which began on Saturday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the conference. During the meeting the foreign minister of Ukrain extended an invitation to Khrushid Kasuri to visit Kiev which was accepted by him, the radio said, the Ukrainian foreign minister also accepted an invitation to visit Pakistan. Kasuri will be one of the keynote speakers at the conference. The Conference on Security Policy was inaugurated by the German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer. The themes of the Conference are Prospects of Transatlantic Relations, Future of NATO and the Future Developments in Middle East. Keynote speakers include king of Jordan, US defence secretary, ministers for defence from Germany, United Kingdom, France, Russia and secretary general of NATO. Founded in 1962, the Munich Conference on Security Policy held every year has acquired the same prestige as enjoyed by the Davos Summit on world economic issues. Kasuri will deliver his speech tomorrow, when the conference will discuss the Future Developments in the Middle East. His address will focus on Pakistan and the Middle East, according to the radio. After the conference, Kasuri would travel to Berlin to meet German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and the Defence Minister Peter Struck, official sources said. He will also be meeting the chairman of the German parliament`s foreign affairs and defence committees separately. Coming barely six months after the visit to Germany by President Pervez Musharraf in June 2003, the visit of the minister is seen as a development in relations between the two countries. Kasuri will head to Warsaw on February 10 for a two day visit and will hold talks with his Polish counterpart Wlodzimierz Comoszewicz focusing on the strengthening of bilateral cooperation. Foreign Minister Kasuri is due to call on President Aleksander Kwasnieski of Poland. Recent years have been characterized by intensification of contacts in diverse areas including agriculture and education betweem Warsaw and Islambad, a government statement said. Pakistan and Poland are also likely to sign an agreement to hold regular political consultations between the two countries. TK/TSH/212 End
