Fiscal 2005 Military Construction and Family Housing Budget Announced
The fiscal 2005 Department of Defense military construction and family housing appropriation request totals $9.5 billion. This request continues progress toward providing the right quality of facilities and assets to support the nation's military personnel and their families. The administration's emphasis on maintaining the right assets to support military missions and quality of life, while enhancing force protection, is reflected in this budget request. The fiscal 2005 program is continuing to improve the rate of recapitalization, while reducing growth in "new footprint" (new assets) and eliminating obsolete assets. The department expects to meet its goals, eliminating nearly all inadequate family housing by 2007 and continuing to make progress toward the goal of restoring readiness to the department's facilities by 2010.
The request includes approximately 318 major construction projects at more than 175 different locations to provide facilities and housing needed by the armed forces and defense agencies and for NATO security investments.
This fiscal 2005 request provides $4.3 billion for military construction (including environmental compliance), $.2 billion for base closure activities, $.2 billion for the NATO security investment program, and $.6 billion for planning and design for future projects and unspecified minor construction.
The request provides $2.6 billion for operating and maintaining almost 211,000 DoD family housing units and $1.6 billion for constructing new units, improving our existing family housing inventory and supporting housing privatization where feasible.
