INTRO: Afghanistan's former king, Mohammad Zaher Shah, is in India for medical treatment. Anjana Pasricha has a report from New Delhi.

TEXT: The 89-year-old Mohammad Zahir Shah was flown into New Delhi from Kabul by a special plane late Tuesday. India's Foreign Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna confirmed that he had arrived.

/// INSERT SARNA ACT ///

We were informed by the government of Afghanistan that he has taken ill . so immediate arrangements were made to receive him.

/// END ACT ///

Reports in Kabul said the former king was suffering from an "abdominal condition."

Authorities in New Delhi did not give details of his condition, but an official in Kabul said he is stable.

The former king returned to Afghanistan in early 2002 after the fall of the Taleban regime, and carries the symbolic title of "Father of the Nation."

He ruled Afghanistan for nearly four decades until 1973, when he was overthrown in a coup and went into exile. (SIGNED)
