Accident kills British soldier in southern Iraq

PLA Daily 2004-02-02

LONDON, Feb. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The British Ministry of Defense announced Sunday that another British soldier has been killed in a"tragic accident" in Iraq.

Robert Thomson, 22, from West Lothian in Scotland, a sapper with the 35th Engineer Regiment which was normally based in Germany, was killed in Iraq's southern city of Basra on Saturday, the ministry said.

"The death was engineering-related, and was not as a result of a road crash, or enemy fire," a spokeswoman for the ministry said.

"Our thoughts are very much with his family at this difficult time," the spokeswoman added.

An inquiry into the accident has been launched.

Nearly 40 British soldiers have died in non-combat incidents inIraq since the US-led war against that country broke out in March 2003. There are about 10,000 British troops positioned in Iraq, and most of them have been deployed in the Basra area.

The announcement of the soldier's death came as reports said two suicide bombers attacked offices of two main Kurdish parties in northern Iraq on Sunday morning, killing scores of people, including top officials.
