Northrop Grumman Receives Multiyear Contract to Build Additional U.S. Navy Early Warning and Control Aircraft
Award Extends Production of Hawkeye 2000
BETHPAGE, N.Y. - Jan. 30, 2004 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) will produce three U.S. Navy Hawkeye 2000 airborne early warning and control aircraft and five Hawkeye 2000 flight trainers under a new $706 million multiyear contract awarded by the Naval Air Systems Command. This award includes an earlier undefinitized award of $108 million and an earlier advanced acquisition award of $21 million.
The company's Integrated Systems sector, the Navy's E-2 Hawkeye prime contractor, will produce the aircraft at its aircraft manufacturing center in St. Augustine, Fla. The first aircraft under this contract is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2006.
"The Navy has placed great trust in us by having us maintain production of Hawkeye 2000 aircraft, which saw combat for the first time over the skies of Iraq last year," said Philip A. Teel, sector vice president, Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare (AEW&EW) Systems, an Integrated Systems sector business area. "This contract will ensure a smooth transition for our workforce and production line to the Advanced Hawkeye."
"The E-2 Fleet looks forward to filling out its inventory of Hawkeye 2000 aircraft and balancing its readiness and inventory with the addition of the TE-2 pilot trainer aircraft," said Capt. Robert LaBelle, Naval Air Systems Command E-2/C-2 program manager.
The Hawkeye 2000 serves as the airborne node of the Navy's Cooperative Engagement Capability, a network of hardware and software that allows Navy ships to share radar data on air targets such as aircraft or incoming missiles.
AEW&EW Systems is currently producing Hawkeye 2000 aircraft under a multiyear contract awarded to Northrop Grumman in 1999. To date, the company has delivered 11 of 21 Hawkeye 2000 aircraft to the Navy and one E-2C to France. AEW&EW Systems will also produce two additional Hawkeye 2000 aircraft for Taiwan under the earlier contract.
The Hawkeye 2000s ordered under the new contract will be identical to the current production configuration. The TE-2s will not be equipped with the Hawkeye 2000's radar, mission computer and other prime mission equipment, but the required wiring and hardware fixtures will be installed.
