10 militants killed in Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi, Jan 30, IRNA -- Ten militants were killed and 1 arrested in 2 encounters in north Kashmir while elsewhere in Kashmir Valley a civilian died and 3 ultras were nabbed overnight, local media reported here on Friday. A defence ministry spokesman said in Srinagar that Indian troops on specific information cordoned off the area Thursday evening where a group of militants was hiding in village Sogam. However, when Indian troops were about to storm a particular house, they came under heavy fire from the militants hiding inside. Reinforcements were rushed to the area and cordon further tightened. Militants holed up inside were repeatedly asked to surrender but they opened indiscriminate fire on the troops with automatic weapons. Indian troops returned fire and in the night-long operation the house was completely damaged, said the spokesman, adding that six bodies of Harkat-ul- Mujahideen militants were recovered Friday morning from the site. He said seven AK rifles, 16 magazines, six hand grenades, 166 rounds and three wireless sets were recovered from the slain militants. Security forces did not suffered any casualty, he added. The spokesman aid one militant was arrested after the encounter. He said in yet another encounter at Fidarpora Machipora in Baramulla district security forces gunned down four militants. The encounter ensued after a search party was attacked by the militants Thursday night, he said adding the house of one civilian was damaged. The spokesman said a joint patrol party was fired upon by the militants at Rathsuna Beerwah in the central Kashmir district of Badgam Friday. Indian Security forces also retaliated and in the exchange of fire one civilian was killed. Militants later managed to escape into the dense forest, he said. However, villagers who took to streets alleged that security forces killed the civilian without any provocation. Indian Security forces claimed to have arrested two Hizbul Mujahideen militants at Wonagam Bandipora while another militant was arrested along with one grenade at Rafiabad Thursday night. Meanwhile, All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) while rejecting the criticism against the recent Advani-Ansari talks by several separatist bodies as "malicious", Maulana Abbas Ansari told a Friday congregation in Srinagar advised its opponents to shed their ego support the dialogue process to resolve the Kashmir problem. Ansari said, "the Delhi-Hurriyat dialogue is a historic step and those who are engaged in spreading malicious propaganda realities and extend support instead of opposing the process." He said a solution to the vexed Kashmir problem could be found only through meaningful and result-oriented dialogue. 2160/NA/210 End
