An Iraqi security officer has been killed and at least 11 other people wounded in a series of roadside attacks in Iraq.
The security officer died near the northern city of Kirkuk, when guerrillas fired rocket-propelled grenades at a checkpoint.
In the central town of Baquba, 10 people - including at least eight paramilitary members - were wounded when a bomb exploded in a pushcart. Another civilian was reported wounded in a similar attack in Basra.
Meanwhile, U.S. Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez says the recent arrest of a senior al-Qaida fugitive in Iraq shows the terrorist group is trying to gain a foothold in the country.
General Sanchez told reporters Thursday, that U.S. officials are seeing tactics similar to those used by al-Qaida, especially in recent vehicle bombings across Iraq.
But he refused to say whether U.S. intelligence knows of any active al-Qaida cells operating in the country.
