Khatami: Warmongering is against int`l security

Tehran, Jan 27, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami here Tuesday said expansion of violence and warmongering stemmed from unilateralism has endangered peace and security in the world, particularly in the Mideast region. Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the first meeting of industry ministers of member countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Khatami said peace and security are pre-requisites for sustained development. In turn, achieving all-out development in international arenas, which would entail all countries and regions specially the less-developed nations, would pave the grounds for cementing peace and international security, Khatami said. He stressed the need for solidarity and organized cooperation among ECO member states to reach sustainable peace and security and said, world economic bodies, particularly the regional organizations, know they can take valuable strides for progress and development through exchange of information and experience. Khatami highlighted the importance of ECO in economic cooperation among regional states and urged the organization to improve economic and social status of member states through promotion of regulations based on international standards, sustained development and in compliance with regional environmental situation, measures to transfer modern technologies, support for small- and medium-sized enterprises and expansion of infrastructural networks. Pointing to the importance of utilization of extensive experiences of world bodies by ECO, the president added the organization should materialize proper economic growth and sustained development through using modern technologies and international standards. He noted that the ECO region has the capacity to become an important economic hub to play an appropriate role in the world economy and international trade regarding its 350-million strong population and immense natural resources. The president expressed determination of Iran`s government to promote current standards, saying the Islamic Republic of Iran has implemented several projects for economic development and creation of job opportunities during recent years. Iran is ready to cooperate and offer technical services and training to all regional states due to its experiences, scientific potentials, technical know-how and research and academic institutions. Khatami welcomed cooperation of all ECO member states for economic development and promotion of the level of welfare of the peoples in the region. The first meeting of industry ministers of member countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) kicked off here Tuesday in presence of President Mohammad Khatami. The two-day meeting will focus on issues relating to enhancement of industrial cooperation in the ECO region. Ministers from the ten ECO member states namely Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will discuss issues related to industrial promotion of the ECO member states. The Tehran meeting will adopt a Plan of Action for Industrial Cooperation in the ECO region comprising various cooperation modalities in such areas as improving investment climate, private sector development and privatization, small- and medium-sized enterprises, technology transfer and human resources development.
