Pakistan, Japan hold security, defense dialogue

Islamabad, Jan 24, IRNA -- Pakistan and Japan on Saturday held their first round of security dialogue in Islamabad and shared their perspectives of regional and global, strategic and security environment. They underlined the need to closely coordinate their policies for peace and stability in the world, officials said. "The Japanese side expressed appreciation for Pakistan`s role against international terrorism and the steps taken by it to promote peace and stability in South Asia," a Pakistani Foreign Office statement said. "The Japanese side also took note of the importance that Pakistan attached to development of its economy," it said. The statement said Pakistan side stated its policy to develop close links with various economic and security bodies in East Asia and Pacific region. Salman Bashir, additional foreign secretary, Asia Pacific Region and Mitoji Yabunaka, director general, Asian and Pacific Affairs Bureau of the Japanese Foreign Ministry led their respective countries delegations to the talks. "It was underlined that Pakistan would like to see greater interaction between South Asia and North East Asia and South East Asia for promotion of economic development and peace and stability." The Japanese delegation also discussed security and defense dialogue in Ministry of Defense. The Pakistani side was represented by Rear Admiral Ahsan-ul-Haq Chaudhry, additional secretary while the Japanese side was led by Atsushi Watanabe, deputy director general, Defense Agency of Japan. Being a major contributor of development assistance to Pakistan, Japan enjoys close cooperative relations Pakistan, the statement said. The security covering a broad range of global and regional issues was initiated in pursuance of the decisions taken by the president of Pakistan and the prime minister of Japan during the president`s visit to Tokyo in March 2002.
