INTRO: Israeli bulldozers have demolished 30 Palestinian homes and a damaged mosque in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, saying the homes were used to provide cover for gunmen and smugglers. VOA's Larry James reports from Jerusalem on the military action.

TEXT: Palestinian witnesses said bulldozers backed by tanks rolled into the camp flattening the homes and tearing down a mosque that had been damaged in earlier raids. The Israeli military said it only went after houses that had been used to fire on Israeli forces.

This mosque was situated very close to the Gaza border with Egypt in an area Israel says is full of tunnels used by militants for weapons smuggling.

Israel has torn down hundreds of houses in the Rafah camp that it says gunmen have used as cover for attacks on Israelis.

Meanwhile, 10 Palestinians were reported injured when Israeli troops used tear gas to disperse a crowd trying to push its way through the Erez border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Israel. Israel Radio said the crowd had become agitated due to long delays caused by new security measures that were put in place after a suicide bombing at the crossing last Wednesday killed four Israelis.
