INTRO: In Afghanistan, three U-S soldiers are reported in stable condition after being wounded in a skirmish in the central province of Uruzgan. V-O-A's Michael Kitchen reports from neighboring Pakistan.

TEXT: U-S military officials in Afghanistan say the fire fight took place Sunday at a base near the mountain village of Deh Rawood.

A spokesman says anti-government militants assaulted the base and that one of the attackers was killed during the battle.

The wounded soldiers were evacuated to a medical facility at the U-S headquarters in Bagram, near the capital Kabul.

Insurgents, mostly drawn from remnants of Afghanistan's former hard-line Taleban regime, continue to attack Afghan and U-S targets, although the frequency and intensity of such attacks has decreased in recent months. (SIGNED)
