Lockheed Martin Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System Approved For Operation

U.S. Navy's Advanced, Next Generation Cruise Missile Control System Ready for Installation

Gaithersburg, MD, January 5th, 2004 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] announced today that its advanced Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System (TTWCS), the U.S. Navy's next generation cruise missile weapons control system, has been approved for initial operating capability (IOC). TTWCS brings new command and control capabilities to carry out missile strikes and can redirect the advanced Tactical Tomahawk missiles to new targets while in flight.

The TTWCS system reduces an operator's turn-around time to respond to new targeting tasks and adds flexibility to mission planning. The system is integrated with the ship's navigation, communication, situational awareness and launch systems to compute the missile's route to strike targets. The system's Launch Platform Mission Planning component is a new capability that reduces weapons system reaction time by speeding up the mission planning process.

"We are extremely pleased to have the TTWCS system approved for use throughout the U.S. Navy. The system will enhance the effectiveness of the Navy's proven Tomahawk weapon system," said Jerry Lindfelt, vice president for Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems, Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems & Solutions. "Close collaboration with the Navy in development of the system contributed to this success."

Navy ships will use TTWCS to plan and execute Tomahawk cruise missile strikes with currently fielded block III missiles and the advanced block IV Tactical Tomahawk missiles that are to be deployed in 2004. The Navy will begin fleet installation of the TTWCS system this month.

The operational evaluation of the TTWCS system was conducted over a two-month period in August and September. The system will begin additional testing for use with the Tactical Tomahawk missile, which is expected to achieve IOC later in 2004.
