TIKRIT, Iraq - In an early morning raid on Jan. 3 in the town of Had Maksar, 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment soldiers captured 15 individuals, including five persons targeted for anti-Coalition activities. All of the captured are suspected of being members of a former regime element cell. Soldiers confiscated five AK-47 assault rifles with magazines and 150 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
A 1st Brigade Combat Team patrol discovered a weapons cache in the early morning of Jan. 2, 10 kilometers south of Bayji. The cache consisted of two 120-millimeter mortar rounds, six 60-millimeter mortar rounds, two rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and 20 fuses. The weapons are scheduled for destruction.
A 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment observation post was watching a weapons cache consisting of RPGs southwest of Tarmiyah in the afternoon of Jan. 2, when three individuals walked up to the site. Soldiers fired on the group as they attempted to flee. One of the suspected attackers was wounded and the other two were captured. The wounded individual was treated immediately and evacuated to 21st Combat Support Hospital. Soldiers had been watching the location since Jan. 1 when attackers abandoned the RPG rounds to escape the U.S. forces that were pursuing them.
