Most US troops to remain in Germany: daily
IRNA
Berlin, Dec 23, IRNA -- The United States has agreed to keep most of its troops in Germany and will also maintain its European Command Center in the south German city of Stuttgart, the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung said Tuesday. It quoted unnamed American officials as saying that a comprehensive troop withdrawal from Germany was not on the agenda anymore. The report cited the immense costs for the relocation of US troops to other parts of the world. Furthermore growing protests by US soldiers and their families have also played a role in Washington`s decision to keep most of its military in Germany. The US briefed recently NATO allies on plans to close or scale down its European bases, notably in Germany, with Poland, Romania and Bulgaria listed as possible new hosts to US troops. Germany, which hosts some 70,000 troops, is particularly concerned about the military shifting as base closures would strike a severe blow to local economies, housing, schooling and other facilities.
