MASS to protect SKJOLD fast patrol boats

Norwegian Navy opts for decoy countermeasure system from Buck Neue Technologien

12/17/2003

Six new SKJOLD-class missile fast patrol boats belonging to the Royal Norwegian Navy are to be equipped with the MASS decoy countermeasure system made by Buck Neue Technologien GmbH. The procurement contract for six MASS (Multi Ammunition Softkill System) has just been agreed between Norway's Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS and Buck Neue Technologien GmbH of Neuenburg/Baden, a subsidiary of Germany's Rheinmetall DeTec AG.

MASS is a revolutionary new system offering effective protection to naval vessels from guided projectiles and anti-ship missiles. The system works by launching up to 32 identical decoys from a directable launcher in a temporally staggered process, deflecting enemy missiles from their intended target step-by-step, which eventually fly harmlessly off into empty space. Thanks to its highly innovative, programmable OMNI TRAP omni-spectral decoys, protection in all relevant wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum is assured, including UV, EO, laser, infrared and radar.

During its first year on the market, MASS was already selected by the German Navy for the K130 corvette and by the Finnish Navy for its new SQUADRON 2000 fast attack craft and Hämeenmaa minelayers. This means that Norway's SKJOLD fast patrol boats represent the fourth class of naval vessels to be equipped with MASS.

Buck Neue Technologien specialises in the development, manufacture and sale of equipment and systems for protecting military and civil targets, occupying the technological cutting edge in this field worldwide.
