NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The fast-attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768) arrived at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., Dec. 16, to repair exterior damage caused by an accidental grounding off the coast of Italy in October.
Norfolk Naval Shipyard, along with Naval Sea Systems Command engineers, will evaluate the submarine to determine the extent of required repairs and the timetable to complete the work.
Hartford deployed to the Mediterranean Sea in October 2003. Oct. 25, the submarine briefly touched bottom while it was traveling on the surface in shallow water east of Caprera, Sardinia, Italy. The submarine returned to the United States after making temporary repairs at the U.S. Naval Support Activity, La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy.
Commissioned in 1994, Hartford is the 57th ship of the Los Angeles-class and the second U.S. naval vessel to be named in honor of the city of Hartford, Conn. The submarine is homeported in Groton, Conn.
