Hamilton Sundstrand to supply the NP2000 propeller for the Lockheed Martin Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft

WINDSOR LOCKS, USA- North America, Connecticut, Dec 15, 2003

Lockheed Martin has selected Hamilton Sundstrand to develop and produce the propeller system for the Lockheed Martin entry in the U.S. Navy’s Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (MMA) program. The MMA aircraft program will replace the current P-3C fleet. The Navy forecasts a need for up to 150 aircraft to accomplish this maritime patrol mission and the MMA aircraft is expected to enter service no later than 2012.

Powered by four turboprop engines, Lockheed Martin’s entry is a modernized derivative of the P-3C aircraft now in use. Lockheed selected the Hamilton Sundstrand NP2000 propeller, which is currently in production for the U.S. Navy retrofit of the E-2C Hawkeye aircraft and C-2 aircraft. The NP2000 propeller system will be adapted to the Pratt & Whitney PW150 engine for the MMA application. Hamilton Sundstrand also will produce the integrated engine and propeller control system.

“This was another challenging competition, and we are pleased the NP2000 was the right propeller for this platform. The NP2000 will bring many benefits to the MMA program,” said Michael Zalucki, general manager of the propulsion enterprise for the company. “We look forward to supporting Lockheed Martin with their solution to the Navy.”

“We have always believed the NP2000 propeller would be the right choice to modernize the U.S. military turboprops beyond the E-2C onto the P-3 and even the C-130 fleets. The customers will see improved performance, at lower operating costs, with improved readiness,” said Robert Schechtman, business development manager for the propulsion enterprise.

The eight-bladed NP2000 propeller proposed to Lockheed Martin for this program captures the latest technological solutions for modern propeller systems. Key features include the all-composite blades with individual blade-replacement capability. The NP2000 propeller will operate more quietly than the current Hamilton Sundstrand 54H60 P-3C propeller and will incorporate an active inflight balancing system.

Hamilton Sundstrand, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), is headquartered in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
