101st Soldiers Seize Former Regime Members, Weapons

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10, 2003 - U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division soldiers seized more than 50 suspected supporters of the deposed Saddam Hussein regime and confiscated weapons today in two separate operations in northern Iraq, according to U.S. Central Command.

Members of the division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team nabbed 52 individuals in an early morning raid covering 34 locations across Mosul, a CENTCOM news release reported. A former Fedayeen Saddam brigadier general, other former officers of the paramilitary organization, and Baath Party holdouts were among the detainees.

Weapons and munitions were seized by another 2nd Brigade Combat Team operation conducted in the village of Salamiyah, east of Mosul, CENTCOM reported.

In Mosul on Dec. 9, 101st soldiers detained 11 people suspected of illegal weapons sales, CENTCOM said.

CENTCOM reported there were no U.S. casualties during the operations.
