EADS Modernises Air Surveillance Radars in the United Arab Emirates
Ulm, 08 December 2003
EADS will upgrade eleven air surveillance radars in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the latest technology standard. As reported by EADS on Monday, the company has received an order by the UAE Ministry of Defence. The contract which will be exerted by the new Business Unit EADS Defence Electronics (in formation) has a value of approx. EUR 20 million.
The air surveillance radars have been supplied to the UAE in 1989 and have been in service extremely successful and reliable. Therefore, the UAE Ministry of Defence decided upon a modernisation instead of new acquisitions, particularly as EADS Defence Electronics (in formation) has proven substantial capabilities in leading-edge radar technology.
The radars will be equipped with most modern solid-state transmitters, new receivers and signal processors. This upgrade provides significant improvement in radar detection performance and interference resistance. Furthermore it guarantees a substantial prolongation in the service life of the radar stations together with a considerable reduction of service costs.
EADS Defence Electronics (DE, in formation), as part of the newly restructured Defence & Security Systems division, will be one of the leading manufacturers of radar, avionics and EW systems for all branches of the armed forces. Amongst other projects, DE will participate in the procurement programmes of Eurofighter, the A400M transport aircraft and the helicopters Tiger and NH90. Moreover, the unit will supply ground and shipborne radars as well as electronic subsystems.
EADS is the second largest aerospace and defence company in the world with revenues of € 29.9 billion in the year 2002 and a workforce of more than 100,000. It is a systems integrator and as such is one of the few companies worldwide capable of combining various products and technologies to form complete systems and offering the associated services. The EADS Group includes the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the world's largest helicopter supplier Eurocopter and the joint venture MBDA, the second largest missile producer in the global market. EADS is the major partner in the Eurofighter consortium, is the prime contractor for the Ariane launcher, develops the A400M military transport aircraft and is the largest industrial partner for the European sat-ellite navigation system Galileo.
